There are black places below, they say; hidden delves and byways stone and earth, terribly fecund, crawling with that which was never meant to be beheld in light of day. The hot air, cold stone all sulfurous and still, a thousand thousand shadowy things in every crevice, beyond every corner. No-one could live there. No-one sane.
